I’m looking forward to Saturday, when the Johnnies make the now familiar post-season trek to Pella, Iowa, to face the Dutchmen in Round 2 of the 2007 playoffs. Known for their tulip festival and windows, Pella is a quaint town of 10,000.
Congratulations John! John Gagliardi: 2007 Liberty Mutual Division III Coach of the Year

Us Johnnie fans are a spoiled bunch. We expect perfection from our football team, and grumble loudly when our lads in red give us a less than super-human performance every week. But high expectations often drive success, and continued success often breeds smug contentment.
Like the team on the field, the SJU broadcasting team of Mark Lewendowski, Bryan Backes and the father-son sideline tandem of Mike and Charlie Carr has given Johnnie football fans as good a product you’ll get in football broadcasting. Nobody talks more football than these guys, so I thought I’d toss out a few questions to the guys about their work…

Dear Tommie:
Oh, how you’ve changed. We used to have so much in common, but now I hardly recognize you.
For so much of the last sesquicentennial our similarities made me look forward to seeing you - not just on the gridiron, but in other sports, too. We’re both Catholic, we had our all-male status and our relationships with our respective sisters, Bennie and Katie. And football? You used to be pretty good. But now? Well sometimes it seems like you just don’t care anymore. If you haven’t noticed, you’ve really let yourself go in recent years.
The Fall Dilemma

Autumn is here, and with the cool nights and falling leaves comes the collision of two pursuits. All year long I know it’s coming as I toil at work, while away the hours staring down holes in the ice, and watch the ups and downs ofTwins baseball. Then, like a cold wind in my face, fall is here, and suddenly I feel like an astronaut with two girlfriends.

Pick your cliche, Saturday’s game is setting up to be an epic battle, a clash of the titans, a battle of the unbeatens. No matter how you say it, this game has the makings of a modern version of the Battle of Stiklestad.

There was a planning committee meeting last Saturday morning for SJU classes with graduating years ending in 8 and 3. A glance at my photo to the left will no doubt cause you to gasp “no way” when I tell you that 2008 (9/27/08 vs Gustavus) will be my 30 year reunion at St. Johns. The call […]

Dressed in black shirts, the SJU Alumni Association Subcommittee for Protection of Circus Animals, paid a visit to last Saturday’s Stiftungsfestivities, confiscating all of Johnnie Red’s red meat. Based upon an anonymous tip (probably from a Tommie), the meat was rumored to contain the meat of circus animals.
Why Do We Gather?

As I sit to write, after a long day of righting wrongs, Hamm’s at my side, I ponder the question: Why, indeed, do we gather? The knee-jerk response, of course, is the renowned St. John’s University football program. But as great as the program is, to many it is much more than that. We gather […]

It was like watching two different games today in River Falls, Wisconsin—the first half and the second half. Those of you who have been reading my game recaps over the years have heard me say how crucial halftime adjustments are such a key to SJU’s success. OK, I was just kidding about my game recap […]
