Time can be a funny thing. It took Bethel 20 years to notch their first win over St. John’s. They’ve beaten the Johnnies 4 times in the nine years since, including the last two seasons. Despite the Johnnies’ concerted effort to establish their running game and maintain their second half lead, Bethel […]

SJU No Longer Perfect; Bethel Wins MIAC Title 17-14
For two years now Bethel University has come into the conference showdown with St. John’s knowing that they were in a must win situation and both times the Royals have emerged victorious.
In both games the Johnnies have gone into halftime with a lead and the Royals have held the Johnnies scoreless in the second half. […]

Johnnie Gameday Predictions
For the second straight year, it has all come down to this: Undefeated St. John’s taking on one-loss Bethel in the season’s final regular season game. To the victors go the MIAC title and an automatic berth into the NCAA playoffs, to the defeated, an uncertain fate at the hands of the NCAA selection committee […]
The View from Bethel
For the Johnnie faithful who have read Austin Murphy’s The Sweet Season, the name Seth Olson may sound familiar. He was the kicker who tallied 3 extra points and a late field goal which provide the final margin in Bethel’s 24-20 win over St. John’s in 1999, the Royals’ first win over the Johnnies in […]
Top Ten Things To Look For At Bethel On Saturday
Bouncing Aluminum Bleachers: Every big play or 3rd down situation the Bethel student body will conduct the most annoying cheer in the MIAC when they jump up and down on the metal bleachers chanting “Deeeefense, Deeeefense, Deeeefense…” There is nothing better than converting in these game situations and being able to hear a pin drop […]
Play-offs Start Saturday for SJU
Recent games between Bethel University and Saint John’s have been intense. Bethel notched their first win against the Johnnies in 1999 and repeated that feat in 2000. Saint John’s was able to put together a string of 5 consecutive wins from 2001 through 2005, but the Royals ended that streak in 2006 at Clemens Stadium to clinch the MIAC championship. The 3rd ranked Johnnies travel to unfriendly Royal Stadium in Arden Hills this Saturday to dispatch the 16th ranked Royals. Both teams again sit poised to claim the MIAC title and automatic play-off berth with a win in this final regular season game of 2007.
Touchdown T’s Post-Corner
A couple weeks ago the Johnnies faced long-time rival St. Thomas and while it wasn’t a Monkey Stomp it was a well deserved win. This week the J’s are coming off a much needed bye week and travel to their biggest rival of the current era (1999-present), Bethel University. No team has had the Johnnies’ number […]
The Untold Story
Here cometh the Esq’s annual telling of the tale of the BC-SJU rivalry. Yes, I did mean to say BC and not BU; no, the contents of the tale may not be 100% verifiably accurate and accounted for. But it certainly makes for a good story.
Inside the Numbers: Bethel and Beyond
After two decades of serving as a football patsy for St. John’s, Bethel finally beat the Johnnies in 1999—their first win in 21 meetings between the two schools. Since then, they have proved to be a worthy gridiron adversary, taking 3 of 8 games from the Johnnies, sharing two MIAC titles with St. John’s, […]
